From 1 to 7 August, the World Maternal Breastfeeding Week, the largest social movement in favor of breastfeeding, is held every year in 120 countries.

This year, the motto is "Support for mothers: let's go for gold" coinciding with the imminent start of the Olympic Games in Beijing. WABA (World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action), the World Alliance for Breastfeeding, wanted to draw a parallel with the sporting event to compare the preparation required by athletes with what mothers need.

Mothers need:

• Receive reliable and up-to-date information as soon as possible • Encouragement and support • Experienced and practical help • Be heard

The obejtivos of this year are:

• Increase awareness of the need and value of supporting breastfeeding mothers • Disseminate up-to-date information on breastfeeding support • Create optimal conditions to offer support to mothers at all stages

In order to achieve an effective result, mothers need the support of a support network based on five rings (again the comparison with the Olympics): family and social network, health care, government and legislation, places of work and employment and response to crises and emergencies.

In Babies and more we also believe that information is the best preparation that a mother has to offer her baby the gift of breastfeeding. Recall that the WHO (World Health Organization) recommends exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months and then complemented with the introduction of food until two years.
